Es ist nur ein (manchmal sehr begrenztes) Mittel zur Positionsbestimmung, das auch ausfallen kann.
Viel entscheidender als die Kenntnis der genauen augenblicklichen place ist die Fähigkeit, sich - auch anhand der Landkarte - in der Natur außerhalb von Wegen und Pfaden frei bewegen und orientieren zu können, Möglichkeiten und Risiken angemessen einzuschätzen und die physische und mentale Sicherheit zu haben, ohne Inanspruchnahme fremder Hilfe zurückzukehren.

Wandern in grönländischer Landschaft bedeutet nicht, mit dem Mobiltelefon wegen einer einfachen Verstauchung oder Orientierungsverlust in plötzlich auftretendem Nebel Bergretter rufen zu können. Wer akzeptieren kann, daß zuerst wirklich alle Möglichkeiten der Selbsthilfe, wozu auch das wetterbedingte Ausharren gehört, ausgeschöpft sein sollten, bevor eine aufwendige und teure Rettungsaktion angezeigt ist, erfährt eine Natur, die in dieser Ursprünglichkeit in den (zweifellos ebenfalls schönen) Kulturlandschaften Europas schwerlich, und wenn überhaupt, vielleicht noch im hohen Norden Skandinaviens zu finden ist. Auch die Gewißheit, sich eigenverantwortlich entscheiden zu können und auch zu müssen, übt auf viele Wanderer einen unwiderstehlichen Reiz aus. Es heißt, wer einmal in der Natur Skandinaviens struggle, kommt immer wieder. Gleiches gilt für Grönland.
