Das durch den Anatomieprofessor von Hagens entdeckte Verfahren der Plastination und die damit verbundene Möglichkeit der dauerhaften Konservierung von Organen, Gewebsresten und Toten, wurde 1994 zum ersten Mal, beim Tag der offenen Tür des anatomischen Instituts in Heidelberg, einer breiten Öffentlichkeit präsentiert. Das optimistic Echo vieler Besucher fand letztendlich seinen Ausdruck in der populärwissenschaftlichen Ausstellung „Körperwelten“, die nun seit vielen Jahren ununterbrochen in deutschen und internationalen Städten gastiert. Seitdem wird über die Legitimität der Ausstellung vehement diskutiert. Namhafte Theologen, Philosophen, Mediziner und Rechtswissenschaftler sind daran beteiligt, wobei die Meinungen unterschiedlich dimensioniert sind. Kritiker werfen ihm den Verstoß gegen die Menschwürde nach Artikel 1 des Grundgesetzes vor. Von Hagens wird der Leichenfledderei bezichtigt, er degradiere die Menschen zur Biomasse, wobei er mit „Leichen spiele, wie ein sort mit Puppen“. Er wird als Vertreter der iteration bezeichnet, die für den Verfall von Sitten und Werten einer Spaß- und erlebnisorientierten Konsumgesellschaft verantwortlich zu machen ist. Der Tabubruch der mit der Ausstellung echter Toter vollzogen wurde, ist ein Verstoß gegen das Gebot der Totenruhe, welches nicht nur geltende Gesetze, sondern auch gegen das kirchliche „Memento mori“ verstößt.

Andere wiederum scheuen keinen Vergleich zum Nationalsozialsozialismus und setzen Körperwelten mit den Verbrechen des Naziregimes auf eine Stufe. Andererseits befürworten viele Geistes- und Naturwissenschaftler, abgesehen von der Zustimmung eines überwiegenden Teils der Bevölkerung, die Ausstellung. Sie begrüßen die Demokratisierung der Anatomie und die Möglichkeit der Betrachtung des großartigen Wunderwerkes der Schöpfung. Das didaktische Konzept gebe auch Laien, die Möglichkeit eines Erkenntnisgewinns über die Gestalt, shape und Innerlichkeit ihres eigenen Körpers. Diese Möglichkeit der Selbsterkenntnis könnte darüber hinaus zur Achtung und Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben führen, wie dies auch schon Albert Schweitzer proklamiert hat.
